How Important Is It to Be Part of the Curo Care Family?

How Important Is It to Be Part of the Curo Care Family?

By Yolande Ellis, Case Manager

We recently received a patient with multiple medical conditions who had undergone several surgeries. His health had taken a severe knock — a long hospital stay left him with a hospital-borne infection, which slowed his recovery dramatically. On top of that, he was diagnosed with several new conditions and suffered a heart attack just days after major surgery.

When he came home, he and his family were overwhelmed. They didn’t know how to manage his wounds, how or when to take the new medications, or how to register everything with their medical aid. That’s where Curo Care stepped in.

As his case manager, I immediately helped them obtain the necessary chronic condition registration forms. I collected his blood results, spoke to his doctor, and submitted everything to the medical aid. Most of his medication was covered by his chronic benefits — and the small remainder was so affordable, they couldn’t believe it.

We arranged for one of our nurses to visit him at home every three days to manage his wound care. When she saw that healing was slow due to poor circulation, she referred him for a wound debridement to remove infected tissue. That made a big difference — the wound started healing properly, even though the process still required time and patience.

But healing is more than just physical.

Our nurse provided emotional support during every visit. She encouraged him with gentle exercises, while I referred him to a physiotherapist who helped him start walking again. That alone was a game changer — it lifted a huge burden off his wife and children.

We also connected him with a dietitian to create a meal plan that suited his recovery needs and made cooking easier for his wife. As part of the process, his wife attended sessions to help her cope with his condition and recovery. Together with the support of their children, she learned how to care for him without burning out.

As his health improved, we updated his care plan to include more physical activity. He took it seriously — and now does his daily exercises without fail.

Even after his wound healed, we didn’t walk away.

The nurse continued check-ins, and I made sure he and his family still felt fully supported. With Curo Care by their side — and reminders to stay on top of doctor visits and treatments — they now experience care that is truly holistic. Support came not just from us, but from the entire circle of medical providers working together.

Today, he is still a proud Curo Care patient — and he’s enjoying life to the fullest.
