Curo Health is the licensed provider of the Stanford University Chronic Disease Self-Management program in Sub-Saharan Africa. This program has been developed for the past 30 years and is evidence based.
OVERVIEW OF SELF MANAGEMENT
Nobody wants to have a chronic long-term illness. Unfortunately, most of us will experience two or more of these conditions during our lives. This program is to help people with chronic illness to explore healthy ways to live with a physical or mental condition. Curo Health recognizes the fact that dealing with a chronic condition has various impacts on the individual as well as the community around that individual.
In an aging population is it becoming inevitable that any individual will develop a chronic condition sometime in their life. Often people see this as a death sentence and are paralyzed by fear, indecision, lack of knowledge, and being unprepared.
An event like this can lead to two predictable outcomes. The one is that the individual does not understand the illness. This leads to no management of the condition, negligence and rapid onset of degeneration. The person often becomes incapacitated, financially inactive, the family destitute and a burden to society. The second possible outcome is one of acceptance and self-management. In this case the individual seeks to understand the condition and what steps should be taken to manage the condition. They will then work with their healthcare providers to create predictable outcomes and ensure a healthy, long and prosperous life.
HOW CAN YOU HAVE AN ILLNESS AND LIVE A HEALHY LIFE?
To answer this, we need to look at what happens with most chronic health problems. These diseases, be they heart disease, diabetes, depression, liver disease, bipolar disorder, emphysema, or any other of a host of others, cause most people to experience fatigue as well loss of physical strength and endurance. In addition, they may experience emotional distress, such as frustration, anger, anxiety, or a sense of helplessness. Health is soundness of body and mind, and a healthy life is one that seeks that soundness.
Therefore, a healthy way to live with a chronic illness is to work at overcoming the physical, mental and emotional problems caused by the condition. The first responsibility of any chronic condition self-manager is to understand the disease. This means more than learning about what causes the illness, what symptoms it may cause, and what you can do. It also means observing how the disease and its treatment affect you. An illness is different for each person, and with experience you and your family will become experts at determining the effects of the disease and its treatment.
